Several months ago I learned from a good friend of ours about a famed chocolate buffet at a hotel in Boston. Rachel and I of course are big chocolate fans, and we decided that this would be the perfect venue for our wedding anniverary celebration this year.
So the two of us left Hartford early this morning, visited the Boston Temple, then headed to Alewife Station where we grabbed the Red Line into downtown Boston. The buffet begins every Saturday at noon and goes for three glorious hours. We didn't want to lose any time so we decided to make reservations for 12:00 pm sharp.
Just a quarter mile from the Downtown Crossing Station we found the Langham Hotel, which has been the home of the Chocolate Bar for the past 18 years. This year, the Chocolate Bar theme was CB3, or Chocolate Bar Three, focusing on the three types of chocolate: white, milk and dark chocolate.
The spread of chocolate truffles, mousses, cakes, cookies, and the like was truly amazing. Three large tables were dedicated to white, dark, and milk chocolate deserts. There was also a chocolate fondue table, a station where they would fry up a chocolate doughnut for you and then you add the powdered sugar and other toppings, a cookie table, and a chocolate crepe station. All in all, there were over 136 different chocolate items on the menu.
Of course, Rachel and I set out to try as many of those items as possible, but alas, out stomaches gave out. Don't get me wrong, we did make a respectable go at it. We were able to try a little from each part of the buffet. After visiting the white, milk and dark chocolate selection, we were beginning to reach saturation. This was a little frustrating because we still needed to visit the rest of the buffet. So we took a little break, then returned and got another three plates in.
At the end, I thought I'd never want another chocolate cake, mousse, or truffle for another year. on our way back to the station, we stopped in at Borders Bookstore, and as we were in the checkout and there was a box of chocolates for sale next to the register. Both Rachel and I looked at each other and let out a groan as our stomaches churned. It took about two days to get over that feeling, and my regular chocolate fan-dom has been restored. I highly recommend anyone in the area to try out this lavish indulgence, at least once in your life
